A week after dropping his Sophmore album Born Sinner and a few hours before hitting the stage for his Dollar and a dream tour, J. Cole sat down with me and revealed the origins of his track "Let Nas Down" and explains how together, he and Nas mastermind the release of God's son's response track, "Made Nas Proud".
“We do the [Car Show], and we’re out first thing the next morning,” he said. “We get to the airport at 6:30 a.m., we get some food, we sit down at the gate. My homeboy is like, ‘Yo, can I hear that song you did?’ As soon as he starts listening to that song, they call for first class.”
What happens next, Cole says, is fate.
“As he’s handing the laptop back, he’s like, ‘Yo, yo, is that Nas right there?’ He points right to the gate, and he’s there,” Cole said.
“Same flight to L.A., in the same airport in Houston Texas at 6:30 in the morning. I knew it was like a fate moment.”
I've enjoyed the times I've been able to interview J.Cole over the many stages of his career. He is one of my favorite legends in the making. We talk about alot in this interview. From the Nas stuff, to Jay Z's thoughts on the album, to his indirect sampling style (which I LOVE btw). Listen to the vid below and go cop that album!
Update: J.Cole's #DollarAndADreamTour was an absolutely insane show! He performed most of it "by request" and 90 percent of it was soley songs off previous mix tapes. Definetley a great way to reward those die hard day one fans. Oh and get this.... who does he pull on stage out of nowhere during the last 5 minutes of the show....Kendrick Lamar. Everyone lost their minds. That's a bang for ya buck alright.
