Above is the last pic I took in 2010 and below are my top 10 personal favorite moments of the year! From having Q & A with Dr. Dre to dancing with Stevie Wonder, to even having one of my interviews featured on Good Morning America, I had an awesome 365 days if I do say so myself! 10. "THE COOL RELIEF" HAITI BENIFET
In January of 2010 Haiti was brought to its knees by a catastrophic 7.0 earthquake. In response to it, a few friends and I wanted to do something to give back. Within the span of 2 days the LAXpaperboys and I put together one of the best shows to ever hit L.A. Nipsey Hussle, Strong Arm Steady, Pac Div, U-N-I, Blu, Dom Kennedy & many more all hit the Echoplex stage for the cause. At first we were all worried, no one would come. It was pouring rain outside and we only did a couple days of twitter promo. As it turns out though, we ended up throwing a sold out show raising thousands of dollars for Wyclef's charity. Beautiful night! (SEE PICS)
9. HOSTED KDAY'S "KRUSH GROOVE" SOLO
In April 2010 I hosted the sold out KDAY KRUSH GROOVE at the Gibson Amphitheater all by my lonesome. Now granted I've hosted a ton of events from small hole in the wall venues to large concert venue's for every kind of artist you could imagine before; but this was the first amphitheater...and I was all alone for the whole show (oh the pressure)! Ended up having an AMAZING time & this has since gone down as one of my fav concerts ever! Too $hort, E-40, Bone-Thugs N Harmony (all 5 reunited for the first time in 10 yrs) and surprise performances from Chamillionaire, X-zibit and DJ Quik. Below is Kendra (playboy) & Too $hort getting it in! (SEE PICS)
8. RAPPED ALONG TO BIGGIE WITH STEVIE WONDER
I had the opportunity to meet Stevie Wonder several years ago at a station Toy Drive I was working, but on this night at a Honey Collective party I had the opportunity to sit down and chop it up with the legend. My girl DJ Eque was on the 1's and 2's spinning a special set to recognize Biggie's birthday. We shared a quick li'll dance as we rapped along to "Get Money" :-) #Epic
7. THE LEFT EFFECT W/ DJ EQUE & DEVI DEV
In March 2010, DJ Eque and I kicked off our Ustream show "The Left Effect", though it's on pause now with my recent move to another state, The Left Effect was our baby! 2 fly girls, raw hip hop and special guests! During our 6 month run we had the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Freddie Gibbs, D.Woods, Talib Kweli, Affion Crockett, Glasses Malone, Hazel-E, DJ Revolution, Jay Rock, Black Hippy and more roll through.
6. MY FAVORITE INTERVIEW TO DATE W/ HARDKNOCK TV
I've had the pleasure to do countless interviews with the fabulous company HardKnock TV. Together we have interviewed damn near everyone you could imagine. Last January though, we teamed up for one of my favorite interviews to date. I sat down with my friend and G-Funk pioneer Warren G, and had the chance to address some questions that had been on every-one's mind for quite some time. 1. Why didn't he sign to Death Row or make any music with Dre & 2. How has Nate Dogg been holding up since his massive stroke. (*Back story, right after then interview I randomly ended up sitting at a club in west hollywood w/ Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine and my girl Erica. So ironic and random considering the interview I had just had*)
5. Q & A WITH DR. DRE
When all else fails, standing in between target and their destination will get you the exclusive. Well...at least that's what I told myself as I prepared to dive in front of Dr. Dre on the ASCAP awards Red Carpet. He was being honored, they said he didn't have time to do interviews and he was being led through the media circus by his body guard. Well, I had one small problem with that. A Detox record had leaked of him and Jay-Z and I needed answers about where it came from and when detox was dropping. Luckily, he obliged me and I didn't end up red carpet roadkill. Check it out!
4. I WENT TO FRANCE!
In April 2010 I had the amazing opportunity to go overseas with DJ Quik, WC and Crazy Toones. Quik headlined the Hip Hop festival in Lyon, France and I tagged along and captured a "Day in the life of a player named Quik"! What I loved most about the opportunity was the chance to experience Hip Hop in another country and another language. The energy was incredible! My least favorite moment though, was trying escargot... YUCK. Check out the footage! (PICS HERE)
3. DROPPING THE "HERE, MY DEAR" PROJECT WITH TERRACE MARTIN
In September of 2010 my pal/producer extraordinaire Terrace Martin and I joined forces to release "Here, My Dear". The 16 track project (23 tracks w/ interludes included) got over 20k downloads to date, garnered 4 videos and cult following that included anyone who had ever been in love. The idea to do the project spawned as we hung out in his Porter Ranch studio and talked about his most recent dramatic breakup. Featuring verses from Wiz Khalifa, Kendrick Lamar, Murs, U-N-I, Dom Kennedy, Kurupt, Snoop Dogg and MANY MORE, "Here, My Dear" bridge the gap between real musicianship and Hip Hop past & present. I am so proud of what was created! And a huge special thank you to RetOne for his artistic vision! *Pssst this just in! The project made XXL Magazine's top 100 mixtape list for 2010! (DL HERE)
2. MOVING FROM L.A TO HOUSTON
In April 2010 I decided to step out on faith. I had been working at Los Angeles based radio station 93.5 kday for 4 years, and although I had great relationships with the people there and had had incredible opportunities to grow; during the last 6 months of my employment I was miserable. For some reason I had the nagging feeling that that wasn't where I was supposed to be. I can't really call it, but when you know its time to walk away, you just know. So...I did. I made the difficult decision to leave the realm of being comfortable. The very second I did, God began to put his plan to work. A few short months later I was all packed up and headed to a great new station, 97.9 The Box in Houston. Words can't describe how exhilarating it feels to be uncomfortable. And I say "uncomfortable" only to explain the fact that I was leaving a world I was an expert in, a world where I had friends, family, favorites and more...for the adventure of the unknown. 2010 turned me into quite the courageous lil lady, and I love it!
Before I left though, L.A sent me off the right way. Big party, lots of friends, and performances from some of my fav's on the new hip hop scene. Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock and U-N-I rocked the house for me. Check it out below! (SEE PICS HERE)
1. MY KANYE WEST INTERVIEW MADE IT TO A TV NEAR YOU
In November 2010 I had the pleasure of interviewing Kanye West for the second time in my radio career. Now typically, when an artist makes his radio promo rounds, they usually visit or call into every major market and talk to a couple dozen stations on the same day. Well luckily for me, a few minutes before he called into my show, I caught the tail end of a news headline on CNN which read: "Former President Bush responds to Kanye West's Hurricane Katrina comments & calls it a low moment in his presidency"...so what's the first question you think I asked him? ding ding ding. YUP. My picture and interview audio not only went viral on all the major sites (rolling stone, rap radar, cnn, perez hilton to name a few) but it also got picked up on television shows like Good Morning America, CNN, E! News and Entertainment Tonight. Pretty cool moment.
